"People Tree", sustainable and Fair Trade pioneers, have launched their Spring/Summer 2016 collaboration with the iconic designer, Dame Zandra Rhodes.
Feminine with a powerful edge, the collection named ‘Girl Power: Roses,
Lipsticks and Bows’ embraces Zandra’s archive prints on a palette of soft colours and the finest 100% certified
organic cotton from India and features asymmetrical hemlines. The handwoven and block printed craft collection
on blue tailored ruffles shows People Tree’s years of partnership with Fair Trade groups in Bangladesh.
The collaboration brings to life archive prints inspired by Zandra’s surroundings in the 60’s and 80’s.
The Lipstick
print was originally created in the 1960’s, and it was inspired by a Guy Bourdin ad in French Vogue. The Bow print
was originally designed in the 1980’s and inspired by Egyptian stars on Zandra’s first visit to Egypt, where she saw
Pharaohs’ tombs. The magical lines of bows criss-cross the fabric as background to the stars. The Check print is
based on Zandra’s stitching patterns, used in her very first collection in 1969. The Rose print was originally created
for Zandra’s Rose Shawl Collection and it was interpreted into pure geometric shapes and wonderful angular
petals.
Dame Zandra Rhodes said: “We went for very simple garment shapes that can be both dressed up or dressed down
and really show off the printed patterns that we have carefully chosen.”
In April 2015, Safia Minney, Founder and CEO of People Tree, along with author and journalist Lucy Siegle went
with Dame Zandra Rhodes to rural village, Thanapara, near the Ganges River in North West Bangladesh. Safia
introduced Zandra to one of People Tree’s long term Fair Trade producer groups Swallows - with whom they have
been partnering for over 20 years. Zandra also travelled to producer group Kumudini, in Bangladesh, to see the
rose triangle design and check design be carved into wood and then block printed by hand.
This unique and fabulous collection consists of eight different styles: jersey dress, long sleeve jersey dress, asymmetrical dress, jersey top, jersey
long sleeve top, woven dress, woven top and woven skirt in four of Zandra’s hand sketched designs. The collection will be available in sizes 8 - 16 at www.peopletree.co.uk from February 2016.
